Review: Where Ice Meets Ash
Where Ice Meets Ash by Mauro Larreal
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Where Ice Meets Ash is an exceptionally well told story that grabbed my attention right away, with its very tense first chapter. Mauro Larreal has crafted an intricate universe brimming with multifaceted characters, moral dilemmas and an undeniable sense of urgency.
Set in a world of chaos and daily survival struggles, the plot centres on Aelia and Kaelen, two determined and resourceful characters caught in a crisis that endangers their home, Dawnhold. Larreal truly shines in bringing these characters to life, showcasing their courage and resilience as they navigate a society on the brink of collapse. Aelia’s emotional journey is captivating, filled with her struggles and her determination to stand up for her beliefs. Meanwhile, Kaelen’s role as a mentor and protector enriches the story further. He faces his own challenges while helping Aelia navigate hers.
The exploration of sacrifice and survival is one of the book's most notable features. The story immersed me in a challenging world, where mutated creatures roam and intense conflict arises from the struggles of city-states. The author's blend of human struggles and supernatural elements adds a special dimension to the story. It’s not just about survival, it also offers deep insights into how far people will go to protect their loved ones and homes.
The pacing of the book is excellent, with tension gradually building from the very first page. The author does a great job of setting action sequences next to quiet, thoughtful scenes, which helped me appreciate Aelia and Kaelen's motives and weaknesses. Furthermore, the dialogues do a great job at creating a sense of realism to their relationships and their dire circumstances.
The support cast is also meticulously developed and players such as Raveena and Aelia's parents add substance and depth to the story. Their relationships with Aelia and Kaelen reveal the delicate balance of trust and loyalty, as well as the challenges of leadership during tough times.
The world-building is truly impressive. The author's keen eye for detail vividly conveys the despair in the city, making the stakes feel incredibly real.
In short, it's an amazing novel filled with action packed scenes combined with touching moments and intellectual concerns. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates a story with adventure, emotion and a dash of the supernatural.
