Review: Unfaithful
Unfaithful by Natalie Barelli
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I discovered Unfaithful by Natalie Barelli on the Libby app when searching for something readily available. I had never heard of this author, but the premise sounded intriguing, so I borrowed it with no expectations.
Barelli drew me into a labyrinth of deception, betrayal, and suspense, in a world where trust is as thin as glass. This psychological thriller is a gripping investigation of adultery, and despite a slow and dull beginning, it just kept getting better.
The plot revolves around an apparently perfect marriage, the type we may envy from afar. However, behind the surface, secrets simmer, and fissures appear when adultery enters the scene. Every relationship in Barelli's story is complicated and loaded with stress. The protagonist, Anna, who is dealing with moral quandaries and emotional challenges, serves as a mirror for our own vulnerabilities. It's a thrilling voyage through the maze of questions and feelings, similar to the emotional depth seen in Robyn Harding's The Drowning Woman.
One of the standout elements of Unfaithful is the writing style. Barelli's style is incisive yet descriptive, disclosing Anna's mind with an intensity that can feel claustrophobic at times. I became immersed in her life, hanging on every word as secrets emerged and tension rose. A very moving moment for me was when Anna faced the truth of her choices, realizing that one irresponsible decision could result in irreversible consequences. These moments of unvarnished honesty make her feel relatable, and profoundly human.
When I compared Unfaithful to other mystery thrillers in the genre, I was struck by how it combines suspense and character development. While many thrillers are based entirely on plot twists, Barelli takes the time to investigate her characters' emotional landscapes. This richness adds dimensions to the story, elevating it above just amusement; it invites thought about the nature of trust and the fragility of relationships.
In conclusion, I heartily suggest this book to anyone looking for a gripping psychological thriller. With its captivating prose and thought-provoking ideas, this book demonstrates the power of well-developed characters and a plot that keeps you wondering until the conclusion.
